An adjustable mattress changes support or firmness. An adjustable base changes the physical position of the bed. They solve different problems and can sometimes be used together.

Adjustable-firmness mattress

The adjustment happens inside the mattress, such as by changing air pressure in internal chambers.

Adjustable bed base

The foundation articulates, typically raising the head, feet or both. The mattress must be compatible with bending on the base.
